Some thing else i would be interested in is the position of the gears on the gear change lever.

Thanks Howard

If you mean where the lever is positioned for the different gears it is the standard (in US) H pattern.

Neutral=Lever is in the resting position which is a straight out position about even with the column and pointing to the right. Depending on linkage adjustments the lever could point slightly up or down from being level with the steering column.
Reverse=Lever is pulled toward you which compresses a spring and is moved up
First= Lever pulled toward you and moved down
Second=Lever in normal resting position and moved up
Third=Lever in restingl position and moved down

If you mean how to adjust the linkage to ensure the gears are engaged in those positions of the handle go to the main menu on the Left column and select the Packard Service Index. On that page select 41-47 Clipper, Transmission and Overdrive, and then check out the various service articles for Gearshift lever, Handishift, gears lock or gearshift sticks and so on. There are numerous bulletins on things to check or adjust. The same linkage was still used thru 1950 so there are a few more articles in the 48-50 years

Hello
Many thanks for the info on the gear positions. Something else i would like to know. Is my car a clipper super eight or is it a clipper 120. It has a straight eight and a 42 model with the non wrap around grill. 4 door saloon. Thanks Howard

The intro section of the 41-7 Clipper parts manual has a model and chassis chart and from that, by virtue of the 1592 body number shown on the Briggs tag you posted it is a 1942 120 Eight on the 2001 Chassis.

The body number is important when determining which body parts were shared between models and the chassis number is used when looking in the parts manual to identify most mechanical items.

The side grills or whiskers were optional although they were on most senior models and not so much on the juniors.
