Probably a speedo cable driven by generator or distributor.

BDC, congrats for the most ingenious idea.
Tom (Rocky46), it goes into the right direction, especially in combination with the speedo cable, brought into play by Keith (PackardV8). The red economy of scarcity resulted in a wiper, connected to the camshaft (OHV).

Hi Guscha

Because they wanted to have infinitely variable wipers before that electrical control had been invented, engineers for the 1961 Lincoln drove the windshield wipers with hydraulic pressure from the power steering system. It works quite well but when the pump needs rebuilding its costly since they drove it from the front of the camshaft.

Guscha, I hope you don't get a flat tire in the rain because your spare will be flat as well.

Packard had some interesting windshield wiper options available in early years; the 1929 Accessory Catalog lists both the quite unique Packard-Trico Visionall system and the McConnell Double Electric system. Packard also applied for and received a patent for a hydraulic wiper system powered by engine oil pressure, though it was never put into practice.

The Visionall system is occasionally seen on 6th/7th Series Packards and was also offered on other quality cars - it cleaned nearly 100% of the area of the windshield by using two vertical blades that rather than swing about a pivot, swept left-to-right while remaining parallel to each other and to the end edges of the windshield. Rebuild kits for Visionall are in reproduction. I don't believe I've ever seen a Packard with the McConnell Double Electric system.

Friends, please find below an astounding discovery. If the Hebrew version of Wikipedia is to be believed then the technology of ZIL engineers has borrowed freely from the future scientific world. The picture shows what happens when a Packard is transferred onto a Soviet holodeck.
