If so, then it' an overly rich mixture and carburetion needs to be examined.

I am aware it's too rich and working in the carb issues , but would like some in put on using some hotter plugs to prevent fouling so easily.

OK, so what plug are you currently using? These engines normally thrive on AutoLite 303 plugs.

It currently has champion j8c plugs. My other 31 straight eight uses a much bigger diameter plug than this one does and I'm not really sure what makes the difference

wiring sizes issues 833 straight 8

after chatting with a friend today about the issues, he suggested that I check the coil and associated wires to make sure they are grounded and tight.
Upon inspection, I realized the hot wire from the ignition switch to the coil was a bit loose, so once I took it all apart to tighten up that wire I mentioned to my friend who was helping that the hot wire from the switch to the coil seemed really small compared to the wire from the harness feeding the switch. So I decided to go from the 16-18 ga wire that had been there to a new 14 ga wire. Upon reassembling every thing the car started up and has run like it was supposed to. So yes I have driven over 30 miles this afternoon and as crazy as it seems I really wonder if that small wire was part of the problem. Id love any input regarding wiring size and the electrical system

Don't believe I have seen any specs for early 30s electrical so these may not quite be apples to apples. For what it's worth Packard did give some specs for later 6v systems that I think would be applicable to the earlier cars.
The 48 specs for the wire between the ign switch and coil is 14ga. 1941 and 48 specs given for coil current averaged 2.5 amps at idle cold and 5 amps stopped cold. I assume idle means points open and stopped is points closed but that is only my interpretation. If the interpretation is correct 2.5 amps with points open seems high so curious why it would be pulling so much. If someone has another definition would like to know for sure.
