Gentlemen- Need help to settle an argument. To check the fluid level on the Ultramatic trans in the 55 Packard should the level be checked with the engine off or,warmed up with engine running and trans in neutral or park?
Old timer said off and cold.

The owners manual does not indicate,

I have always done the engine running, transmission in neutral.

The service manual describes what to do,

I think I'd be careful about accepting advice from your "old timer", cold and not running would be the absolutely worst set of conditions to check the fluid level for your Packard, and probably for any automatic transmission. Shop manual says warm engine at curb idle, selector in "N".

With the dipstick in the engine compt, it is easy to check with engine running but since the 55 converter drain back characteristics are the same as earlier models, If for some reason you do want to have the engine off Packard said to make sure the level was checked within one minute after stopping the engine.

I was always told when I started tinkering with cars in my teens that you check with engine running in neutral or park. Warm but not necessarily hot.
