John (JW), Renault seems to be a reliable cooperation partner. Nissan/Renault is in operation for almost 20 years and Mercedes/Renault works for a couple of years to develop common platforms and engines.

The Dutch -> DAF 44, a car one may used in a country without mountains since its two-cylinder flat twin engine developed not more than 34 HP. But the company wanted to show the world that such small cars could even compete under severe conditions and participated in many races around the globe such like rally Monte-Carlo and Lime Rock (12,700 miles around Ohio).

Despite the small engine the DAF offered a belt-driven automatic transmission, the so-called Variomatic.

Those young ladies look like they are having a lot more fun on top of that DAF than any driver would have behind the wheel! With its blistering 2-cylinder 34 horsepower engine, I'm surprised it didn't bring more world recognition to those DAFfy Dutch!!!

I can remember renting a DAF on one of my business trips to Holland and Belgium in the late 60s or early 70s. For the little I asked of it, it was just fine.

Craig (MrBumble), to say it with Dave (O_D), for the little the owners asked of it, it was just fine. A 34 hp engine must be a roaring rocket for those, who drove a Renault 4CV with 19 hp (pictures below). Its drivetrain was so successful, that Renault installed it into various models until 1985.
But okay, adventurous drivers ordered the "Grand Luxe" version with 21 hp.

Regarding post #25, the opel Admiral.

Was that actualy BUILT in Germany or the US and then shipped to Germany???
Either way, with SBC and Powerglide and the general look of the car it is nothing more than the US built Chevy Nova (Chevy II). A Nova with just some ginger bread trim to make it look like something special.

As for Renault there was the LeCar and i think Alliance (bigger car).

In the 1980's i worked on the AMC tracking and distribution system for AMC/Renault partnership. It was nothing but an abortion gone bad.

IIRC Renault had some the highest sales of any car in Europe at that time and for many years.

But quite frankly, for the US market/service demand or just about French or Italian car was simply not up to US customer/driving demands.


As for Audi. Circa 1975 -1980 time frame (Audi Fox) was a piece of shit car. Or here in the US it was. IIRC many of the Fox simply wore out at about 40K miles.

But they were real popular with many people that today would be described as having a an iPhone8 mentality.

Keith (PackardV8), Opel in Germany was owned by General Motors from 1929 until 2017. They manufactured Opel-branded passenger vehicles in Germany by German employees

Opel-designed and manufactured vehicles are also sold under the Vauxhall brand in the United Kingdom and used to be distributed under the Buick brand in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and China and the Holden brand in Australia and New Zealand...." But this chapter is closed now. Opel in Deutschland is a subsidiary of the French automobile manufacturer Groupe PSA since Aug 1, 2017.

This weekend the -> Port of Hamburg celebrated its 829th birthday. On this occasion I visited the -> harbor museum.

Before the thread jumps to its few vehicle exhibits, I would like to recommend this museum. To put it in a nutshell, it is wonderful.

"...The Hafenmuseum Hamburg houses a unique collection of transhipment and shipbuilding in the Port of Hamburg as well as a distinguished collection of territorial shipping on Elbe river and in the port. Those who want to discover history and development of the Port of Hamburg, is on target in the Hafenmuseum at the 50s sheds.

Little thing I noticed - The museum's address contains the word "Australiastra?e". With the help of a translator this turns into "Australia road"! Begs the question, why?
