Thanks; all was well after I got home. I had the gas tank cleaned, replaced the fuel line, bought new tires and took it to the car show a month after this email was written. I think it vapor locked on the way home from that car show, and that's when I learned about keeping the fuel line cool and added an additional electric fuel pump to try and help.

A mechanic told me that he puts a return fuel line in older packards as a way to circulate fuel and keep it cool. He is the head mechanic for a local packard limousine company. I'll try that this summer.

A wonderful story. Quite a journey and great perserverence to ensure you made it to your destination. I really enjoy reading histories or anecdotes from Packard owners about their cars. Just one thing, could you tell us a little more about the 3 pieces of wood in the gas tank?

A wooden handle off of screwdriver, and two other pieces of wood, and some rocks. I imagine some kid was playing and it ended up in my tank long before I bought the car. Needless to say it works much better without the wood in the gas tank.

One of my very earliest memories as a child was sitting alongside of a road with a little girl named Sandy Anderson and putting gravel stones down the gas tank filler tube of a 1930's something car so we could hear the "plunk" sound as the stone hit the gas in the tank. I was about 4 years old.

So, after researching BigKev's project blog and chatting with Eric, I think I'm going after the water distribution tube behind the water pump. Has anyone tried to get the tube out without removing the grill? I realize I'll need to remove the radiator and water pump, but I don't feel like pulling the whole front clip off.

Worse come to worse, you can pull the grill and leave the core and fenders in place.

Thanks, will do. Just wondering if someone had experience trying to get the distribution tube out while the grill was in place. I can't remember from your blog, do I need to buy special gaskets for the water pump?

More than likely if the water pump has been in place for a long time, then you are going to need the pump back plate to block gasket.
