Wasn't the Trabant, being a 2 cycle engine, sort of a problem later. I seem to recall reading that they were considered one of the dirtiest polluting engines made in an automobile. When the divide ended, the former West Germany and other countries were refusing to allow them to be registered or used--something to that effect-- and that owners were forced to get rid of them or not use them outside of the Soviet bloc.

Loyd: Funny video have seen it posted before. Have you ever seen the video of a blown up HumVee and the damage that occurs from an IUD, when the HumVee doesn't have proper armor protection. Also showing what happens to those American troops riding in them.

The title of the video is George W. Bush Sends Our Troops of to War Without Proper Equipment. The subtitle is HOW TO WASTE SIX HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS

Tour guides I've had in Berlin seem to just love to tell the (probably apochryphal) story of the day the wall came down and 300,000 Trabants crossed into what was West Germany. The pollution was so bad you couldn't see across a street.

Gerd: Another car from the former Eastern European Block not quite as bad as the Trabant was the Yugo.

The Yugo was imported into the United States by Malcolm Bricklin. I think this had to be about the worst automobile ever imported into the United States. I must note that the final production of Hugo's ended in November 2008. This piece of junk was imported from 1986 through 1990.

Didn't Danny Davito make a movie about a town in the Us where all the cars were Yugos. The Russian built Lada and the 4X4 Niva were imported into Canada for a few years and there was a dealer in town but I haven't seen one on the road for a couple of years. They didn't stand up to the Canadian winters very well however, but few cars are sturdy enough for -40 winters and lousy roads.
