The good folks at Classic & Exotic Service Inc. in Michigan have made an exacting reproduction of the Purolator SF-3 filter used on all 7th-9th series Packard 8 cylinder models, as well as many other makes and models. This new unit houses a modern spin-on replacement filter cartridge available from your local auto parts store. The detail on the ends is exactly like the stampings of the original.

Gulp!! $$$$$$ Well, you only have to buy this once, then the replacement cartridges are $6 each. It's made in the USA, by real wage earning Americans, not Chinese labor. There are no more originals to be had, and if one is discovered NOS it can cost this much and be of dubious quality/liquid tight capability. Let's put it this way-my boss isn't getting rich off of making this.

Does the end unscrew or does the entire can need to disconnect and remove to change the spin on element? Wasn't there another similar type holder made at one time or maybe still is -- possibly for another year or engine -- where the canister unscrewed in the middle to change the element?

The kit sold by one of the CCCA regions for the Purolator L6 and L8 included a set of matched threaded rings which you soldered in place after you cut the original housing at the center. Also the Burr Ripley L6 and L8 repro unit, while it did not thread apart at the center, did separate at the center to install a new cartridge. The R&A L6 and L8 unit doesn't separate at the center, but uses the same principle as the others.

It maybe expensive, but it looks pretty nigh perfect. And it's a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild!

The threaded fittings can just stay in place, you loosen the two mounting bands that hold the body of the filter to the engine, then place a screwdriver into a slot at the bottom (or wherever the user orients the housing) and put a slight amount of pressure on the end with the fittings and the can comes off. It's held in place by an O-ring that press fits the filter end into the empty canister. Just a press fit.
