48 288 Intake / Exhaust Manifold Replacement

Hello,
I have been putting off replacing the cracked exhaust manifold and gaskets for some time on my 48 288. The current manifold looks like it was over-tightened to the intake and cracked. Fortunately, this group help me source another, thank you Ross!

Anyway, I finally jumped in and was able to get all the nuts loosened and it is ready to come off!

After extensive research here I know I should have the intake/exhaust manifold checked and machined for flatness once reassembled.

Is it a best practice to replace the studs and nuts when reinstalling? The heat valve moves freely, I need to get a fresh spring/cover from Kanter.

Anything else I should consider doing while I have them off?

Thank you everyone.

I found out the hard way about repairing these manifolds. I tried to have mine welded and they were pretty much ruined. Ross was also helpful by having one manifold but since mine were both cracked I bought another off ebay and when I got it it was also cracked. A local machine shop told me about a man who does metal stitching which I had not heard of. I brought the damaged manifold to him and he was able to repair it, for less than the welder charged me to ruin the others. I realize you already have a replacement but this is for future reference and so you can have your original repaired if you wish. I will probably bring my originals to him one day to see if he can fix them. My original studs were reused as was the spring.

Thanks for the information Roundsy! I have been holding onto all the old or broken parts for her, so this information is valuable!

I was planning on reusing the studs, just wanted to make sure I wasnt overlooking something in the process.

Appreciate it.

Very happy, finally got the intake/exhaust manifolds all put back together with many freshly bent lines and she is running great! I was so intimidated to replace the exhaust manifold myself, but it went extremely well - a big thank you to this site for assisting!
