Hi guys,
Has anyone ever rebuilt their door locks? The rotary lock is so worn that it's hardly closing. And I ordered a another one it's as bad as mine. So I'm thinking it might be easier to rebuild one.

I have rebuilt 4 or 5, not that hard to do. I would suggest you take apart the extra one you have, you need to heat up the tabs that are bent over to straiten them and grind the end of the shaft so that the inner cover can be removed. If you are up to trying let me know and I will take some pictures and add the info on the new pot metal rollers.

If the discussion is about the replacement of the four lobed 'wheel' that engages the striker plate, then try the following postings.

packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... lat&order=ASC&type=&mode=0&start=46

I've edited the original posting to include 'http://' and seems to be the key in adding hyper-links. I've also edited the 'start number' to point to the correct posting.

Let's try that link again. This is the pointer to the first item on the fifth page of the thread. Scroll down to the items with the PDF attachments . . . lots of photos of a latch disassembled, and suggestions on replacement of the rivets that will be destroyed.

For a bad rotary wheel you might also keep an eye out for the Roto-Lokit kits that show up on ebay from time to time. Mopar products of that era apparently used the same basic latches as Packard and there are several of the same kits packaged in Mopar boxes for their cars. A couple of the Mopar kits and one or two Roto-Lokit kits are on ebay now but I don't have a cross as to which particular kit fits a specific year Packard or lock. Sometimes a vendor will post photos of the paperwork that comes with the Roto-Lokit kits which gives a rundown of all the locks it fits.

jsa03781 and ptv: I am up to my backside making new wood for my station sedan, two years to date. I will be in my shop tomorrow and will look for an old lock that has a bad wheel. Are you doing the drivers door? and I don't have one, I might ask you to send your bad lock. If it is for the custom its chrome and will see what you want to do about plating. I will fix one and take pictures and just charge you for the new wheel and shipping. Dell
The picture that Howard posted is not the best way to repair it.

Hi guys; I went through my box of locks and have three convertible and five or six for sedans. No left fronts, the one in the four pictures is a right front. The rotary lock kits are from ebay, they show up from time to time and I have collected a supply. I have marked the three tabs that need to be bent up and the rivets heads that have to be ground off to remove the cover that secures the wheel. Then clean and reassemble.
