Correct finish for 1930 chassis components

I would swear I have seen this discussed here, but I can't seem to find it. So, my 1930 733 sedan has paint scheme B, which means that all chassis components(except engine) are to be painted black. So, should the black be gloss, satin, or flat?

The remaining paint on the frame looks, after a bit of buffing, to have a satin sheen.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom:

These folks have been in the auto restore market for many years and offer this. Might be worth checking into as to whether it is too glossy or not.

According to the PI Chassis Judging guide draft that I saw. (and it was a preliminary draft only). All chassis components are painted Chassis Black (except in those cases where custom painted chassis were ordered). Chassis Black is designated as low-cost, low-gloss black paint. Basically it was there to help prevent rust, not to be a show piece.

Or it can be painted body color for and extra $25 or was it $50. As evident on my car. See attach Pictures.

I have some better pictures at home I can post later if you like.

Hey Tom,

Nice work on fixing the wood sill! Have you finished painting the body?

For my car the chassis was originally black, so I am leaving it that way. The chassis on my 34, however, is body color.

Cheers,

Tom

In 1934 the factory price for "chassis in color" was $55 for the Eight and Super Eight, no cost for the Twelve.

Tom,

Thanks but I can't take credit for the sill work. A gent I work with did it for me. He is also doing the door panels for me.

For the paint work winter has stalled that part of it for me. Hopefully in a few months when warmer weather finally sets back in here I will get back to priming/painting the rest of the body.

FYI I went with POR-15 chassis black for my frame. Some suspension parts I POR-15 and had some powdered coated.

Have a great day
Tom
