Just an inner piece that shields the engine compartment from mud, but no liner like modern cars have.

Yes, the '51 has a splasher at the rear of the front fender just like my '50.

Yes that was what I was referring to as the inner piece that keeps the mud out of the engine compartment. But there is no liner (like the plastic ones in modern cars) that protect the underside of the fender from rocks or mud accumulation in the headlight bucket area.
