This car belonged to my late father, its been in storage for 20 years and I don't know much about it. Anything you can tell me about it would be much appreciated.

1929 626/633/640 would be my guess.

It can't be a 1930 because it has but a single fan belt.

Numbers, numbers, numbers. How about giving us the vehicle number? It's on a metal plate that's probably on the engine side of the cowl, the plate has the Packard Motor Car Co. name and logo on it. If there is no plate there, look inside the cowl just above the clutch pedal.

In the absence of that, and assuming it's original to the car, the motor number and the wheelbase (between wheel centers) should pin it down.

Numbers: I don't live in the same town as the car. Next visit I will collect the numbers as you suggest. Thank you.

Rob if you can get the left side of the hood open the motor number will be on the forward crankcase arm like so:

If 626 / 633 the number range is 233017 to 276166

If 640 / 645 the number range is 167001 to 178879

On Edit - I finally looked at hood side louvers - clearly this car is a Standard Eight.

G'day Rob,
Like to add my too. I'm sure the Packard people here can help you identify yours.

When you do identify it I invite you to include it in the Owner Registry here, together with a pic, any known history and how it was acquired.

The plaque on the firewall gives a vehicle #247862. There are also the numbers stamped on the firewall: >022049<. The number on the engine located on forward drivers side crank case arm is 248068. So with this information I understand it is a 1929 626 standard 8 sedan, does anyone concur? Are the numbers consistent with the model and year? I would like to sell this car, located in Kennewick, Washington, but not sure how to get comps in order determine an asking price. I was offered $5,000 yesterday... does that sound reasonable? Thanks for your help.

Dear Rob:

We don't need to get technical here and all that.

The car is a 1929 626 sedan. More formally it is an early 6th series because of the visor.

The deluxe models had hood doors and the standard models louvers although a three door hood was an option. The 1929 had no glove boxes and thin trim around the gauges, small horn button, aluminum floor boards, stirrup foot pedals etc, etc.

The 626 was the base model Packard and so the highest production lowest price.

How's that?

Rob,

Another big question is whether or not it will run or if the engine is frozen. Odds are you can get it running fairly easily IF you use care and patience. A running car will be worth more than a non-running car to most buyers.

If you decide to keep it you will find a lot of help here on the Forum to get it up and running safely again. Or, if you just want to get the maximum value for it and tinker with it a little it may not take much money to at least get it to run (without driving it).

First you want to be sure that the engine is free. Again, there are a lot of wonderful people here who will help take you step by step if you are a novice at bringing an old car out of hibernation. Just let us know and we'll do what we can to help.

Gene
