So you have no insurance. You are aware it is possible to insure against damage a car that is not registered? Is your mechanic a listed, tax-paying business or some guy working out of his garage? Real businesses usually have insurance to pay when stuff happens, but his resistance is probably indicative of his set-up.

The guys looking for parts help. I'm sure there are forums on small claims, and insurance claims that can help him elsewhere.
