In a silent corner in a night train I found time and leisure to lose myself in the contemplation of early A/C attempts, published in US newspapers in 1938/1939. In those times, this innovation occupied a permanent place in the headlines. I look forward to show you a digest of newspaper clippings.

Just to put some time perspective on the subject, the ocean liner RMS Queen Mary, entering service in 1936 but whose engineering work dated to 1929 and whose construction began in 1930, had Carrier air conditioning in the first class dining room and several other public spaces.

It is kind of interesting that back in those days heated only air was called conditioned rather than conditioned meaning the usually cooled air as we know it today. Stude's Climatizer and Nash's original Weather Eye only heated the air yet today when hearing the term some think it was a fully heated or cooled vehicle. At least Nash renamed their air conditioned cars as being "All Weather Eye" equipped.

Speaking of Climatizers and Weather Eye's, with all the other catchy names marketing came up with for Packard options I am surprised they did not have something appropriate for the 22nd series first built in heater/fresh air system. They had Econodrives and Electro-Matics and Dual Stream heaters before that. They named the new luminescent style instruments Flite-Glo so surely they could have found something for the first modern style heater in their postwar cars.

I don't know why Packard stopped to call their air condition system "weather conditioner" but found annother attempt to coin a term for car A/C. After collecting three or four news articles, containing an obviously central orchestrated promotional campaign for a coinage like "coolditioner" or "colditioner" I lost the USB-stick and wasn't able to take up this trail again.

Wesley, be it plagiarism, unchallenged takings of agency reports, newspaper associations, low budget or rather low quality standards, hearsay evidence, clash of interests (advertising sales), political colors, local patriotism, a hillbilly chief editor and/or owner, ..., there are several reasons to view the information content of local newspares with some mistrust.
