Very nice, thanks so much for posting, I'd not seen that one before. The other promotion on the proving grounds was the "the king is dead, long live the new king" test of the 1940 Super versus a 1939 Twelve. The 1940 Super won, but even back then it was said there were suspicions of the race being rigged. Does that one exist on film?
Another one I always enjoyed reading about was the early Twelve and a Gene Sarazen golf drive, both accelerating from a dead stop. Of course the Twelve beat the golf ball. Does that one exist on film? It was originally photographed as there are some still shots.

I like that 0-60 in 13 seconds run with the Super Eight! Wish mine was that fast. I wonder what gear ratios they used in that car or what tuning etc. it had to get that kind of performance.

Owen, I don't know if there is a video of the Sarezen Golf stunt, but I did find a reference to it in:
"American Horsepower:100 years of great car engines" Author Mike Mueller Pg. 59 -"A completely different, if not downright oddball test also occurred at the Packard Proving Grounds in July 1932 when Legendary golfer and longtime Packard owner Gene Sarazen pitted one of his classic tee shots against an equally classic twin six speedster driven by Jesse Vincent. It was left to the Detroit News to recount the epic showdown. "Impelled by the force of Sarazen's unerring swing,the ball shot out in front of the car. Then its slowly spending force became apparent against the relentlessly speeding car, which Vincent's foot was keeping unwavering at 120 miles per hour. There was a space of many yards when the car and ball were racing on even terms. Gradually the car pulled away, its wraithlike length moving out in front of the little white sphere." Reportedly, Sarazen's ball travelled 230 yards in 4.5 seconds while the Packard needed only 4.1 clicks to cover the same distance." Now that is one fast Packard!!

Dave and Don, My interpretation is that the Packard was travelling at a constant 120mph. Wicked acceleration would be required to make an impression on a golf ball over 230 yards let alone to stay with it off the club face. This being well before the era of Top Fuel Dragsters. What say yea?

Maybe it makes sense if the golfer were at a certain point, and the Packard started a distance away. As soon as the packard came to the point that the golfer was standing at, the golfer hits the ball. They would both be traveling at the same speed, but he Packard gets to the finish line first?
