The one I was thinking of looks like this and uses the original cable. It can also handle the pulser device. I'm not sure if this is the exact type I recall but it is at least very much like it and needs only power to work.

In the meantime, does anyone know the center to center spacing of the Packard vacuum motor's attaching screws?

That is one version of the optional 55-57 Chevy electric wiper motor. I forget which year just bolts in a Packard and will take the co-ordinator directly as long as there is a mount on the motor for the co-ordinator bracket. One year Chevy had a different co-ordinator so that motor bracket does not work with the co-ordinator Packard used. The mounts came with the washer kits so if removing a motor from a junkyard car without the washer the mount may not be there.

I had one of those motors on my car for a lot of years that I was lucky enough to find it in a junkyard in the 70s. Downside is price and availability plus it is big, heavy and bulky. Unfortunately I believe the original 55-7 motors are now almost as expensive and extinct as some Packard AC parts. They do show up on ebay but AFAIK, that style was not repro'd or if it was, has sold out. Several Chevy sites are starting to promote the Newport as their electric option.

Thanks Don & Howard! For the advice and options. I have a friend whose into 55-57 chevs, maybe he can score me a wiper motor

My motor was turning freely with the plugs out, it will go forward then stops & then backwards but reaches a point where it will not go any further. I have the left valve cover off but looks like I have to remove the heater box to get the right one off

Back in the 1970s a friend and myself changed over a few 1955-56 Packards to electric wipers. But our change-overs were bolt-on installations with no angle-of-the-dangle motors like Chevys, but horizontal units. No wild modifications. No odd appearance. As I recall we got these directly out of mid 1950s Buicks and bolted them right into V-8 Packards.

Dads 56, I removed the valve covers on my 55 Clipper without having to remove the heater box. I expect the Clipper and the Packards are the same in this regard.

P.S. Here are two photos just showing the heater box with the cover off and on after restoring.

I don't recall any particular problem removing the cover. It is tight back there, but the cover came off without having to disturb the heater box. And, it went back on with no problems.

discovered why I cant get the valve cover off. this hose appears to be routed wrong when compared other photos of engine bays I have seen on this site. what would be the correct routing for it? should it go underneath or behind the heater box and come back up around? I have to remove it anyways to get the valve cover off. might as we position it correctly.

thanks.
