Air chamber or pulse dome. The idea was that it softened the impact of the indiviual pulses of fuel, somewhat melding the individual pulses into something more resembling a continuous flow. In any case it was later deemed non-essential and just eliminated. It's of no real practical benefit.

I won't hurt either, so if you're an "authentic" type then keep it.
I think you can still get them. Most positive displacement (PD) pumps have a flow pulse, and this is supposed to dampen those spikes, but flow's going into a fuel bowl or through a filter and that'll do the same thing. Won't affect performance as noted above.

Even though I understood that at some point it had been eliminated, both of my 1954 Patricians have it and so does the spare core of the same flange number that I just rebuilt. One is an early production car and the other is later production.

Thanks for the additional info guys. I really appreciate it.
Part of me would like install one to make it look original, but it's probably not worth replacing (assuming they're even available anymore). I'll just leave the FP the way it is for the time being. Thanks again guys! -Chris

Contact one of the rebuilders mentioned on this site. They probably have buckets of them.Quote:

I was going through some of the parts that came with the car yesterday, and I actually found two of 'em. I'm hesitant to run one though, because I'm assuming there is a spring and a rubber diaphragm inside. Who knows what the condition of those parts are after all these years. I'd hate for the diaphragm to come apart and send small rubber pieces into my freshly rebuilt carburetor. What do you guys think?

No internal parts, just space for an air bubble.
