Good afternoon all,

We've come to realize lately that our beloved 645 Deluxe Eight may not be as original as our predecessors advertised it to be over 16 years ago. There's been quite a questionable repaint done on the chassis, tie rods, and most the undercarriage is over-sprayed with the same "orange creaminess". After noticing these details after a thorough inspection and service, we're debating if this is even a 1929 color in the first place. Any insight in the production of this runabout chassis would be most appreciative. Unfortunately, this was one of the first cars entered in the collection in early 2004, it was actually purchased on eBay in '03 - ergo, provenance is a little thin.

Thank you for your time and thoughts.

Hello,
A quick glance through the Literature archives here on the site indicates that the cream color may be "old Ivory" which was a 1929 color, but I don't see anything close to that orange color in the chips on this site. There is also the possibility that the chip selection here is not complete.

Can I ask you a favor? I am trying to replicate the correct muffler brackets for the 1929 Model 645 chassis. I have a 7 passenger sedan rolling on that same 17.5 foot railroad as your runabout. would you mind terribly snapping a picture of the brackets at the back of the muffler and sending them to me in a private message? Thanks
John W

Based on the font used for the vehicle number, the patent plate (VN plate) is not original.

As to colors, painting the car body in non-stock colors was available for a fee, as was chassis in color.

I don’t know much about Packard’s of this era but the plate stood out as a reproduction poorly done.

G'day kyfami,
to PackardInfo, but I'm sorry I can't help with your question.

I see from your profile you're Curator of The Hendricks Collection. Also from the Collections Facebook Page there is at least one other Packard in the collection, described as a "1939 Packard Super Eight Victoria Convertible by Darrin".

Accordingly, I invite you to include both Packards, as well as any others the Collection may have, in the Packard Vehicle Registry.

There were some wild schemes in California. W.R. Hearst bought a pink and purple Duesenberg for example. However, unless the car is painted black I would be suspicious of any claims to originality. At least they got the firewall color correct.
Old car sales claims are like a wife getting frisky for no reason. Suspect she's been having an affair with the exterminator.

Thank you for all the responses. I will add the cars to the registry shortly this week after our Hagerty tours.

If it's of any help, I found the original eBay listing from 2003 - describing it as "all original" (yeah right) and "Buffalo Orange" - however no PPG or codes are listed.

Admittedly, I am still learning, but studying the color chips, the prestige brochures available that year, and the magazine advertisements, a LOT of 1929 and 1930 Packards today are painted in colors the factory never dreamed of - and far too many are wearing whitewall tires when you look at contemporary photos and advertising.

As was said, I've been told that the factory would paint your car any color for an added fee, but black fenders seemed to be the norm on just about everything back in 1929, everything else aside. The body VIN plate is most assuredly a reproduction, which raises questions about everything, so without provenance, I don't know how you would prove the original colors.

The 640 I'm still waiting to arrive (title issues with the estate of the previous owner) is painted light yellow with black fenders, roof, and trim, and it looks like an overgrown taxi cab. I will very likely be changing the body color to something more standard, despite the family claiming this 1970's repaint to be the original color.

I am VERY curious, given how unusual the colors are in factory advertising and the factory brochures, how many cars were painted non-standard colors, as they were definitely advertising cars in colors not shown on the paint chip samples we have available today.

Beautiful car, regardless of all else!

I had a set of original 1929 Packard paint chips from the ACME paint company and there was a color that I believe was called straw that sounds like your color. Sadly I don't have the chips any more. There was also an orange chip like the car first pictured above.
