That's Leeedy with 3 e's. You are very welcome.

As I indicated, and as I would have expected, you've got a Carter fuel line filter rather than AC. With the permanent ceramic fuel filter, there was no need to have a huge glass bowl.

Some of these even had small magnets in them (which trapped metal particles in the line). Your glass bowl would attach with flat straps rather than a bail wire clamp. Of course all the filtration ratio goes away with a paper filter. But, it is what it is today.

One thing is for certain: Packard knew what they were doing with these fuel systems.

My 1956 Clipper Custom has the Carter fuel system including the filter and I recently got an NOS ceramic insert for it. Fortunately the glass is still intact so no need to replace the whole thing. The NORS filters I have were used on earlier models and are identical to those on my 1951-1954 Packards other than having a paper filter. Somewhere I have a filter assembly that is much taller which may have been in one of my prewar Packards but I’m not sure.

Sorry about that Leeedy. It was late last night when I was typing everything up on my phone. I never thought it would be so difficult to keep a thread up to date. Thanks for all the info guys!

Progress report....


CARB

I ordered the screws in the attached pic to replace the ones I stripped out while messing with the throttle valves. I still need to tap the 1 hole for a 8-32 since I broke it in the Shaft. I. Will never take the throttle body apart again, just clean it in place.

GAS TANK

I threw a whole bunch of screws and bolts in the tank with evaporust and let it sit for a hour each side and shook the hell out of it. After that I did electrolysis. Degreased, now drying before I etch dryyyyyy and finish with sealer.

EXAUST MANIFOLD

I removed the exaust manifolds since I had a small leak on the passengers side and a huge leak at the heat riser on the drivers. I plan to derust and paint the manifolds.You can see in the pic where the gasket was blown out, pretty sure that's where the leak was. The heat riser won't come off the exaust pipe I spray a good amount of PB and plan on trying to get it off tomorrow. If it doesn't budge are there any tips to get it off? Also, what color were the manifolds from factory? Black? Or just cast iron?


I finally got her up on stands ! I have never worked under a car on stands so I was kinda nervous at first but now I feel like it will take a earthquake to bring that boat down!

I am about to similarly clean the tank in my Henney-Packard and as hardware is easier in my shop to find than gravel, did the hardware also come out clean? Just curious!

Hello, yes it did. It is a pain the the butt to get the hardware out though. I ended up moving it all to one corner and fished it all out with a magnet. I tried sliding the tank back and forth until they all fell out but I was already tired from shaking the crap out of it!

Nice idea on the rust remover + hardware combo. I'll keep that in mind for mine.

Of note, for large stuff that's not particularly fragile, it's cheaper to just use muriatic/hydrochloric acid. However, the acid will slowly eat away at the metal itself so you can't just let it sit for days. Pour it in in the morning and check it after 10mins, ½hr, 1hr, then every couple hours throughout the day until you've reached the desired level of corrosion removal, then remove.

Another advantage to acid is it removes all corrosion, not just ferrous, and it's faster.

The main concern with my own tank is plugging the whistle with the sealer which is something I didn’t have to worry about on the 1954 Patrician tank. My car is a 1951 and the last year of the whistle for passenger cars but I believe all the Henney-Packards had it since they used the pre-1951 tank.

Alright so I finally got the heat riser off, kept spraying and waiting with the PB and it finally loosened up enough on the tail pipe to pop off. Looks like the lip that should slip into the exaust manifold is pretty much gone.

I have 4 options...

1. Buy a new one from Kanter..$165.00

2. Get a rebuilt one from Max Merrit if they have any instock. They had one online Sunday but now it is not showing, I take it since there is a core charge what they offer is rebuilt?

3. I contacted PSW Packard Parts. They have a used one I can get for $75 that I will need to clean up. If I go this route what parts should I order to rebuild?

4. Install a spacer that eliminates the valve. Is there a spacer out there that has a lip on one side that slips into manifold and flat on one side that accepts exhaust flange? Pros and cons to this approach?


Any recomendations of what route? Thanks guys!
