gasket fit my windshield fine. it just wasn't wide enough to fit in the opening and capture the glass at the same time. it would either sit on the glass or sit on the lip of the metal...but not both correctly. the second gasket was a bit better, but not perfect and i was tired of jacking with them...so i siliconed it all up.

basically one of two thoughts...either the gasket wasn't right....or the opening in the car grew by itself magically...top to bottom. the window would sit on the bottom lip of the metal fine, but in doing so the top lip was not captured by the gasket. the gasket wasn't thick enough...plain and simple. garbage, but i made it work.

The 55-56 have a tendency to have to front/rear windshield openings "grow" due to rusting of the rear trunk area/body mounts area and the rear body sagging which causes the openings to open up. We had a car in our shop that had the original windshield and a 1/8" gap between the top of the windshield and the gasket. It had broken trunk floor in the area of the body mounts

No such rust on my car. So have no clue. Body mounts are new as well. window fit fine when I removed it.

Tried putting the chrome across the top of the rear windshield tonight. It was not too bad since the glass is sitting on a table. However, I started on one side and went across. When I got to the other end I have an extra inch of chrome.
The groove in a seal stops about an inch from the bottom on both sides.
I checked under the two connecting pieces across the top and there is no space left in either one to shorten it.
I wonder if I got the front piece mixed up with the rear. Will have to check that out tomorrow.

Oh that's just part of the experience

I would check that but I honestly wouldn't even be surprised...

Everything "windshield" on these is such a pain.

I am looking forward to the challenge....no I am not.

There is no way to confuse the front and back windshield chrome. They are very different.

I guess the groove on the original seal did not stop an inch above the bottom.
I don't see any way to overlap the sections under the connectors so I am toying with the idea of trimming the section that is circled on both ends. The lower chrome should hide most of it.

Before cutting you might want to double or triple check the size of the glass and rubber seal versus the size of the opening. If I recall correctly, the glass for a '55 convertible is 1" narrow than a hardtop.

Remember the old adage "Measure twice, cut once".

Marty, the difference in the convertible windshields is about 2 inches.

This is the original rear windshield that I removed myself. Only the seal is modern.

The new front windshield is still in the box as I do not have a seal for it yet.

Stewart.

Put the seal on the car. See how it fits on body seam.
