Okay. I found some working horns at a fair price. The horns work, but don’t sound great….yet. I’ve take the the first one apart and have started cleaning it up. As with many others I’ve seen, there was no saving the gasket. So here’s my question for those who have rebuilt your horns. What did you use to replace the gasket?

I would send it to Olson’s Gaskets and have them make new ones. That way they can keep a pattern for the next person and their turn-around is extremely fast too.

Thanks, Don. I didn’t know about Olson’s. Looks like a good source to keep on file. In this case, though, I can make the gaskets easily enough as I know I can buy gasket material pretty cheaply. I’m just not sure which material would be best. There are several types available at most auto parts stores…about $10 for a sheet that will easily do both horns.
I’m going to take a look and see what looks right and give it a try.

So, I’ve gotten the horns working well. I used 3/32 rubber/fiber gasket material and just made the gaskets myself. . I’ve cleaned up the internals as much as I can. The diaphragms aren’t in the best shape, but seem to be solid. Now, I just need to keep working on the cosmetics. I’m not going for show car, but I’m confident I can get them looking good.

Good job and it looks great! That said, I like to keep family-run businesses like Olson’s supplied with whatever work I have as it’s important to keep them around. In fact, I just arrived at the Oregon shop and should have some small felt seals from them waiting for me once I actually go next door to the shop itself.

I agree. I’m sure I’ll be reaching out to them for other more critical gaskets as get further into the restoration.

I’ve again made some good progress on my search for parts. My existing trunk lid was in bad shape. My dad had been rear ended back in the early 60s. And the bottom is rusted out. But, the Flackmaster put me in contact with Bob who has a good one. This week, I was on a business trip in the area where Bob is and got to see the trunk lid in person. I also had a great time visiting with a new friend. Now, I’ll just be like a kid waiting for Christmas for my “new” trunk lid to arrive. Here are a couple of pictures of my exiting trunk lid and the “new” one.

Could probably cut out the inner bracing and straighten the original out, then reweld the bracing back in. I would not throw it away.....

Yeah, I don’t plan to throw it away. This is just a case of finding a better one that will reduce the restoration cost. Once I have the care done, I’d be willing to sell the old one to someone who needs one.
