These are tools made by the late Dan Yocum to remove the dash knob switch bezels on 55 and 56 Packard.

I'm interested, but can you explain briefly how they work?

Packard had a special tool to remove the switch bezels on the dash for 55 and 56.

You'll notice the dash bezels have a hex indentation around the switch shaft, which is used to unscrew the bezels from the shaft. So to remove them without damage, you essentially need an Allen key with a hole drilled in the center. This tool does that.

I can't really see what you mean but I'll trust ya on it.

The first photo is the bezel from the front where you can see the large hole that used to be hexagonal in shape that exactly matched the outside hex on the tool. The reason this hex looks so chewed up is because someone tried to use a small screwdriver or some kind of tiny needlenose plier to remove the bezel. The nut can be rather snug when the switch is in the dash and the hex opening was chewed up by whatever was used in the process of trying to get it to turn.

The second photo is just the nut that threads onto the end of the switch mount that sticks thru the dash hole.

The third photo is the rear of the bezel showing how the nut fits in a pocket cast in the bezel. This bezel is missing a small thin retaining ring that lays in a sort of wide area around the pocket and nut that gets crimped over to affix the ring. The ring would then hold the nut in the bezel but still allow it to turn and make it an assembly. While the nut does the actual work of holding a switch to the dash, the ring being affixed to the bezel is strong enough to keep the bezel also pressed to the dash front. When those unfamiliar with how the bezels are attached and removed simply attempt to pry them off the dash, the ring is torn from the crimped part of the bezel which for the most part means they cannot be installed again.

Thanks Howard, I see what you mean now. The tool is used from the front, it goes over the knob stem and turns the captive nut on the back.

Will definitely be using this as I plan to polish up / restore pretty much the whole dash next year.
