Atomic Packard Update!
The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History of Albuquerque, New Mexico has placed the restored 1942 Packard Clipper ~15 passenger Limousine ~ on exhibit On Mon, Apr 6, 2009 at 9:15 AM, James Walther, Director of the Museum, wrote to me: > Thanks Dan, > Make sure you don't call us the atomic museum anymore as we > closed that. We are now the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. > Thanks for promoting us....and yes, as of yesterday, most of us have been > working for 8 weeks without a day off. Now that we are open, things should > slow down a little bit. > > Jim > Pictures? They have also posted 22 new pictures of the restored Packard on the Museum website blog. I believe the Flickr website had lots of pictures of the rusty old shell of the car. I found the following links to the restored version. The photos are good. I suppose the videos work on Windows (though they didn't work on my Linux computer). Looks like they did a nice job but am curious if it runs since it took several to push it into place.

Good question.
I think they didn't run it indoors. Could it be a 'trailer dolly?' I'll ask Jim. DanL

Perhaps since it's going to be a permanent indoor display, they choose not to put any fluids in it. Like gas.

Well here is the latest scoop in the National Museum of Atomic Science and History's 1942 Packard Clipper - stretch 'taxi' ...
SORRY, GUYS. They have not run the engine. I KNOW THAT HURTS DEEPLY (to a website full of Packard Geeks and Grease Monkeys, BUT LAST NIGHT I EMAILED THE MUSEUM DIRECTOR: Jim, After 4 minutes and 43 seconds of posting your Packard Pictures, I have received a question Question: The photo shows men pushing it in place, does the Packard run? Answer: ? THIS MORINNG HE EMAILED A REPLY: Dan, No, we decided not to restore the engine for operations since it poses a problem for internal exhibition. The motor looks like it will run, all painted nice and we are assured it could if we wanted it to but it does not operate presently. Jim *********** SO, as much as all of us would be curious, eager,, chomping at the bit, dying to start this relic, it didn't happen. I don't know the s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d wheelbase id the Clipper, but would not recommend it for downtown parallel parking. THEREFORE, I GUESS they will go back to other forms of transportation ... DanL

Maybe why they aren't restoring the engine to running condition might be a five letter word MONEY.

can I get "picky picky"...? Wood-grain on dash and window revels WAY off - door lock buttons wrong (looks like off-the-shelf AutoZone or Pep Boys). GREAT steering wheel; wonder who did that.
Did you guys catch the door latching mechanism visible on the shot thru the center door ? Bet some of you will recognize where THAT came from ! Yeah - looks like a six. Since it was going to hilly country, wonder what the rear axle ratio was ! |
