Are you talking about the rear axle or the rear crankshaft seal?
I believe those engines did not use a rear main crankshaft seal, rather a slinger. There are various issues that could be occuring, look for "slinger". IF you are talking about the rear axle, there are seal kits available from the major Packard vendors, Max Merrit, use their online search tool for 1940-42 and search for "axle" Max Merrit And Kanter Kanter 1940-50 Packard Parts There are a few bearings which have been added to the cross-reference on this website: Packard Parts Cross-Reference, Rear Axle Components, this website

For the rear end, Max Merritt has kits containing the needed seals and gaskets for the axles and also has the pinion seal.
If replacing the pinion seal, do a search on the forum for old threads on the job. Those have suggestions and cautions in removing the flange nut. Since the U joint flange has to come off to change the seal, the nut holding the flange also has to unscrew. The tension and location of that nut determines critical adjustments on the pinion and ring gear so in order to avoid future problems it needs to go back on exactly how it came off.
