You can look in tank thru hole in trunk floor where gauge goes in tank. Not required to drop tank . The fuel filter is located at bottom of the fuel pump on oem system most have glass bowl with stone filter .

The cover is a tar paper like material located under mat at front end of trunk floor. Under it you will see the sender which is held by five screws and special washers with a gasket. The sender can only be installed one way as one hole is offset. Special washers needed to prevent leaks if tank is full and front of car is down hill. I enlarged my opening in floor and made steel cover. Found it easier to put sender in tank without screws then attach fuel line to sender avoiding cross threading fuel line. I think 58 does not have fuel line in sender that system only 56 57. The 58 fuel line is at bottom of tank.
If you want a new tank Stephen Allan Studebaker has them
