"Edison" batteries were available, and had some advantages over lead-acid, but they could not deliver high current on demand.

As Riki pointed out here, hydrogen would be a better option which is still electric as far as the motors (not engines: electric engine is a misnomer) are concerned but with a hydrogen generator supplying the electricity. The problem would be the infrastructure. We have stations nearby that have hydrogen pumps but not all areas do yet.
