That was the sound my motor was making when I bought my car, which I had hoped was a lifter noise that would clear up, but it didn't. Strangely enough it would almost go away at times, generally after a short drive, but then would come back again. The sound was more noticeable under heavier load when driving.

I isolated it to #4 cylinder by pulling plug wires off one at a time while it was running to find what cylinder the noise was coming from. When I pulled the head and valves I found the exhaust valve guide on #4 had excessive wear, I'm 99% sure this was the source of the noise.
