Hey, Just joined, First post .

I bought a stash of five 288 engines from a local farm (Australia) (1948 thru 1953)
The plan is to build up one good engine then build a car around it, An open wheeled Speedster is the plan.

Anyway, I have most all the parts I need apart from engine mounting rubbers .. If anyone could give me a lead there.

And I had no starter motor, So I figuired I'd go through my parts pile & see if I had a starter I could adapt.
Who knew a 9 tooth Toyota Hilux starter motor could be made to fit.

Nicely done and thanks for sharing the information. Aside from the cost of the motor, the conversion was probably relatively inexpensive to do as well.

For those who do not have the skills or equipment to make an adapater plate there is a very similar commercial version available from Vintage Auto Garage. Downside to using one of the mini starters is the requirement for 12v -- either by a full conversion or some type of second battery in series circuit to power a 6/12v split operation which only uses the 12v to power the starter.

For your custom build, be sure to use one of the 1951 or later blocks as they have the more modern mounts cast into the sides while the 1950 and earlier do not. The earlier engines had a three-point mounting with two on the transmission and a single one at the front of the engine which may be difficult to build around.
