Alternative Starter Motor & Engine mounts

Hey, Just joined, First post .

I bought a stash of five 288 engines from a local farm (Australia) (1948 thru 1953)
The plan is to build up one good engine then build a car around it, An open wheeled Speedster is the plan.

Anyway, I have most all the parts I need apart from engine mounting rubbers .. If anyone could give me a lead there.

And I had no starter motor, So I figuired I'd go through my parts pile & see if I had a starter I could adapt.
Who knew a 9 tooth Toyota Hilux starter motor could be made to fit.

cheers Don

Nicely done and thanks for sharing the information. Aside from the cost of the motor, the conversion was probably relatively inexpensive to do as well.

For those who do not have the skills or equipment to make an adapater plate there is a very similar commercial version available from Vintage Auto Garage. Downside to using one of the mini starters is the requirement for 12v -- either by a full conversion or some type of second battery in series circuit to power a 6/12v split operation which only uses the 12v to power the starter.

For your custom build, be sure to use one of the 1951 or later blocks as they have the more modern mounts cast into the sides while the 1950 and earlier do not. The earlier engines had a three-point mounting with two on the transmission and a single one at the front of the engine which may be difficult to build around.

Great idea. You won't be the first. Ross has made one and probably has spare engine mounts too.

Outline your plan some, he can probably give you some advice.

Good point.

I had noticed the difference in engine mounts. Looking at both engines side by side the earlier engine also has a nice chunky harmonic balancer where the later engine more or less just has a pulley .

Or is that a manual trans vs Ultramatic thing? Perhaps the Ultramatic dosent need it because of the torque converter ?

Hey Mal, No worries .
I just have the engines at the moment, Once I collect my chassis I'll have the cars identity so will add to the database .
Assuming I can even find a chassis number. I've got access to two chassis , not sure If I'll go with the 39-47 Fargo (116"wb) or a '29 Chrysler (121" wb)

There was a change to a narrower belt in 1951 and, as for the difference in harmonic balancers, while the 1951 and later type was thinner, I believe it’s bigger around so should do about the same thing.

They slapped bigger dampers on the 9 main bearing engines.

The dampers are of different type construction which explains the thickness variation. Don't remember reading anywhere if a specific damper choice was determined by engine , by year, or by belt width.
