Ok... get some sleep...
The terminals on the motors must be powered only ONE at a time. It is grounded through the case. The motor is actually powerful enough to severely damage the suspension if you spin it too far up or down, so I don't know what it could be binding on. I would remove the motor assembly and control box from the car so they can be bench tested and repaired if needed. Be sure to follow the service manual instructions on how to remove these items. The suspension has stored energy in the torsion bars. Also I just bought a few spare torsion level motors. Once we figure out what is wrong, I could sell you a refurbished one if needed.

The limit switches and electrical layout was changed from what the 55 version in the service manual shows and that is one of the 56 style limit switches. There should be another identical switch but different colored wires near the driveshaft, It is a Normally Closed switch that opens when the last output planetary gear carrier plate which is shaped like a cam rotates around and pushes the switch plunger to open the switch. Wiring on those switches, particularly the one near the driveshaft can vibrate and break right at the point where the wires are soldered to the switfch terminals.
Here is the 56 wiring diagram with all the contacts inside the various switchs and relays shown. The optional manual override switch is shown enclosed in the dashed red square. If the car does not have that option the light green wire from the brake switch connects thru the on/off switch under the dash directly to the control switch and the other two wires going to the control switch are not present.

The wires from both of the limit switches go into the Compensator Control Assy. If the wires you broke are to one of the limit switches, the motor will not run in that direction.
