I think there is paint only in the grooves.

That's how they did the hubs caps. They polished them first, then painted them.
I'm sure they polished them, then paint them, which then allowed them to wipe any excess paint off the high points.

Thanks for the update. I hadn't thought about the hubcaps, but would definitely be similar.

Kevin is correct. I took good look with a bright light at my dash and there is definitely gray paint in the grooves in the die cast trim. It's very obvious in the wider central groove, but there's no doubt it is also in the fine grooves. The narrow grooves in the clock and speedometer trim rings may also have the gray paint in them. I believe one of the 120 sales brochures mentions the paint. (Antigua Gray?)

Thanks! Very helpful. No matter what, my first step is to get all the pieces cleaned and polished as best I can. That will also mean removing any paint that may still remain. Then, I can add the paint back where it belongs. I do have a NOS clock from Flackmaster. I hadn't thought about looking at it so I went and looked. It shows no sign of paint at all, just bright shiny chrome. Based on that, I would conclude that the groove in the clock and speedometer were not painted.

The trim pieces polished up quite nice. I’ll have some looking to do for the paint.
My guess is that the paint color should match the gray of the gauges, speedometer, and clock. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, I would imagine it would be the same or very close. They sell those little cans of rustoleum enamel which I think would be a good paint to use. Or Testors model paint.
I bought a red and a black rustoleum to try repaint my hubcap this winter.

Yeah, I was thinking about testers model paint as you can get a LOT of colors.
I’m not quite sure of the best process. It seems like it would just be paint the entire surface to make sure paint gets down in the grooves. Then, wipe off the surface. Of course, if it doesn’t turn out to my liking, I can always start over. I’m sure there will be multiple attempts to get it right. Thoughts?

Please excuse my trim, my car was left outside for years and being a convertible this caused pitting of the chrome.
The way I did mine was I polished as well as I could, like you have. I then taped off the wide areas and sprayed it. (I used black as my choice, as there was no evidence of any colour left and I like the effect of the black, sorry.) After the paint had dried a week I scraped the paint from the fine ribs. With them being polished smooth this was quite quick and easy. Good luck, Bob J.
