For 56 I don't think they ever did it as it's not in the parts book nor this chart. But definitely for 55.

Part of my thought is that for 56 they finally integrated the brake and reverse into one assembly, so I can't imagine what it would have looked like without reverse. My guess is that presenting reverse light as an option to the customer, when the bezel is already in the frame, would have seemed far too stupid for the $1 of savings for that one wire.

Many items were optional. In '54, oil filters and heaters were still optional.

Another fun fact, for cars without heaters, clip 416150 was used, attached to the heater cover panel. (This drawing is front of firewall, rotated 1/4 turn to the right.)
