Going to be servicing my Gear start Ultramatic in my 54 packard. Can anyone recommend a good Conditioner to put in the fluid?
It's running fine now, just want to keep it that way! First time changing it in the 17 yrs Ive had it.

Just add fluid to top off. Type F they say works well in the Ultramatic.

Definitely do not use any alcohol based trans-fix additive or seal softener.....that is used car dealer stuff to get it off the lot. Yet, only a matter of time before problems are back for a proper fix. If your trans is working well, don't introduce contamination to the system.

Drop the pan and clean it as well as the screen. Hammer down the flared holes in the pan that someone inevitably made in the past from overtorque. New cork pan gasket. Indian Head Permatex on the pan side only. Torque 11 ft-lbs with a click torque wrench. Refill with Type F. Follow the instructions in the owner or service manual for refill and level-check procedures.

I would follow PGH's advice. Clean the pan and filter, if any, and refill with the correct fluid. Be careful to follow the correct procedure for filling and checking the fluid.

Can't say I'm a big fan of coating any surface when using a cork gasket as they work best when clean and dry.

You coat it on one side only. It helps fill in any gaps since the pan is irregular in comparison to the machined face. Oh, and the gasket will stick to the pan nicely if you ever need to drop it again.

Ross has been doing it this way for who knows how long. Same with the engine oil pan. So while you certainly aren't incorrect, it seems better overall to use the Permatex on one side.

I've always done the same thing if for nothing else but to keep the gasket in place and lined up for an easier assembly.
