1929 manual gives .004 or greater, when hot. Page 129
packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/archi ... p?catID=10&cat_pid=56&ContentID=130 I suspect that any greater measurement that permits silent operation would be acceptable.

Hi Gar,
The 1922 - 1928 Service Manual says the same: “Remove valve cover plate and adjust tappets standard - not less than ,004” clearance with motor warm and idling. Be sure to use wrench S. T. 216. Note: Be sure valve adjusting screws are properly locked. See that valve cover center stud is tight so it will not lie against distributor drive shaft, causing rattle” Phil

I always set them warm at .007in inlet, .010in Exhaust. Set half the valves in the engine firing position ( No 1 Inlet and Exhaust Closed). rotate the engine 360 degrees and set the remainder of the valves ( No 8 inlet and Exhaust closed). Use tappet spanners which are readily available at flea markets, Hershey, etc. Peter Toet

Is is safe to use heat on the tappet nuts?
I have tried to break the buts free with my std open end wrenches but cannot get enough leverage to break the nut free. Thanks Gar

I small bit of heat worked great with the rust buster. The tappet wrenches (which have narrow heads) gave me the leverage to adjust the tappets easily.
Thanks for the suggestions. Gar
