Hello fellow Packard owners..

I've been searching for a while on how to install a towbar on our Packard Clipper Custom 1955, we have a caravan that we would like to have behind Penny but not sure how to go about it? 🤔

Can we pick a towbar/hitch/hook the whole thing from a modern car and somehow weld it or any other suggestions would be helpful! 😀😊

Thanks in advance!

Packard issue a 55 technical bulletin regarding reinforcing the frame when towing. Also some cautions with cars having the Torsion Level suspension and a vertical load at the rear of over 500 pounds. I can't say if your caravan would be heavy enough to need any of their recommendations but reading thru the bulletin might give you some idea of limitations and what type of hitch to look for.

There is a lot to know about setting up a passenger car for safe towing, especially when towing larger, heavier trailers. The trailer manufacturer is usually a good source of pertinent information, and any available information from the vehicle manufacturer ought to be consulted.

Thank you for the bulletin, very helpful indeed! 😊 We will definitely research more before going ahead with the hitch/towbar..

I have always wondered about the towing part on older vehicles. I've seen a bracket/tow hitch add-on for bumpers like my '39 and I've seen some pics or old movies showing towing but I don't know how often that was really done, or only really for certain vehicles, etc. Unfortunately some of the examples I've seen were around what not to do (i.e. 3 Stooges and the like). Curious to know if anyone has photo/video examples or any formal documentation on such a tow.
