Idle variations update

Last fall I posted that the idle varied on my 55 400. It turned out that the problem was caused by an improper wire spring clamp on the vacuum feed at the rear of the carburetor. Changing to a modern band and screw type solved the problem.

So the old spring clamp was causing it to leak? That's been my concern with the sitting clamps on the '56... Not sure they are holding tight enough to prevent vacuum leakage.

Yes, they are supposed to be period correct. I would not use recommend their use. I had them on my 55 radiator both upper and lower, and replaced both. They leaked.

With a vacuum system and good fittings, even the hose alone without a clamp should not leak. If it does, then either the hose is old and too hard or it’s too large but either way, they should be replaced.

Correct and there's no reason the Corbin wire clamps are not satisfactory. People replace them only since they are a pain to use.

They are indeed a pain to use. I replaced all of them with modern clamps when I did the heater hoses, for that reason alone.

I will also say that I used correct 3/8" ID for the big vacuum lines to the brakes, and it is not tight enough without a clamp (Corbin or others). There was an audible leak with no clamp. The smaller lines hold without a clamp fine.
