Yes. I looked at the large photo. The metallic is way too large. As I mentioned, it should barely be discernible.

A few updates. Here is attempt #2 at the paint. This is the same paint formula; the only change was switching from PPG J74 "Fine Aluminum" Toner to PPG J69 "Extra Fine Aluminum" Toner. Which really changed the color pretty dramatically when viewed inside. The light color is the new spray (#2), and the dark color is attempt #1.
![]() However, when viewed from outside, on an overcast day, they appear much closer. Which, if I look at the various "Almond Green" paint chips is closer to their average color shade. ![]() The metallic is more of a shimmer than actual flakes that are visible. But it was sprayed with a bit of mottling, which I am sure is more of an issue with my spray technique. Single-stage metallics are not the easiest to spray. I didn't have that issue with the larger flake in #1. I was going to have the shop make me another sample with 1/2 the amount of the extra fine aluminum in it. I'm hoping that darkens the color just a touch. But for reason, they were closed today.

So, since spraying a #3 paint variant today was off the table, I moved on to another task that needs to be done before the engine returns, which is degreasing the entire front frame. Even though I did that two winters ago, the Jag motor managed to leak enough oil to spray it over pretty much every square inch of it.
Everything was degreased, and I pulled the wire harness back out of the frame and removed the horns. Tinfoil works great for masking off all the brake lines, hoses, and other components you don't want painted. All the surfaces to be painted were scuffed and then received two coats of black epoxy primer, followed by two coats of 2K semi-gloss black (also known as Hot-Rod Satin) urethane. ![]()

Kevin, the frame looks great and I love the green color - it really suits the car well, and maybe you can tell people it is "Packard British racing green" just to confuse people! Fingers crossed everything checks out perfectly on your new engine.

After a lot of back and forth, and spraying out 4 different variations with different shading, different metallics and different amounts of metallics, this is what we are going to go with. Not an exact match to any Packard color specifically, which would be near to impossible given the fact both the chemistry and type of metallic mediums are vastly different, and who knows what if any of the paint chips are still correct.
But we are calling this 1937 Metali-Chrome Jackard Green #4. Both of these are the same color, the only difference is black primer vs Grey primer. Nicole likes the darker one (left) hich really comes into its own in the bright sun. ![]() We found a modern color we liked and then changed the metallic from medium and coarse metallic called for in the formula to an ultra fine aluminum powder at the same percentages. This resulted in a color that was super light green and silvery, which looked very odd. So more tweaking was done. In the the above final color, we reduced the metallic from 21 parts to 3 parts. Being such a fine metallic it was very hard to keep it mixed and duspeneded in the paint. I had to put a couple of stainless ball-bearings in the paint cup so I could keep mixing it as I sprayed and between coats. This above is 3 med-wet coats of single stage Acrylic enamel. While I was there at the local paint shop, I had my guy there also mix up a match to the 1937 Junior dashboard structure color. This is a very, very dark brown. It was matched the brown around the dash cluster that is protected from the sun by the wood grained inserts. So I have a formula for that now as well. ![]() The plan is to get the dash and firewall sprayed soon. The green will go on firewall so it's ready for the engine. The dash will get painted so the car can start going back together for the summer.[UPLOADING IMAGE.... PLEASE WAIT]
