They can fail for whatever reason but there's so many out there that it can't be that big of a deal to get them working again. Idk the causes but I assume they just get dirty.
If the switch ball sticks it causes a vacuum leak.

If the starter switch on your carb is complete, then probably just a cleaning is all it needs to fix your vacuum leak. You can check and see if the contacts are working at the same time and decide if you want to reconnect it again.
