You can just add a quart of oil and it would probably fix it if it's not too bad.

In case you didn't know it, with the conversion you will lose the vacuum boost for your wipers so you'll have to use a dual diaphragm pump or you'll need to convert them to electric. Packard was rather unusual in having the booster in the pan with the oil pump so the conversion doesn't have that.

Gotcha, the previous owner had actually converted the wipers from vacuum to electric already.

Question for the experts here.
As I mentioned above, the same year Cadillacs also used a vacuum pump siamesed with the oil pump; the Cad version is slightly shorter. Today, we were rebuilding a couple of Packard oil pumps for a customer and found one of the late version pumps with the plugged relief valve has a short (Cad) vacuum pump on the bottom of a Packard pump. Has anyone else seen this? Was it a thing? jack vines

Good morning all. I don't want to disagree with experts but I just installed the oil pump upgrade kit on a 1955 Packard 400. It worked great, no noise at all. The car will cruise all day at 75. The one thing you might want to watch is high oil pressure. I had 10w 40 in it at first and the oil pressure gauge was reading at about 3/4 to the right which I was told was too high. I switched to 5w 20 and after she warms up it is right in the center or just a hair over.
I did not lose my vac. operated wipers. Thanks to Mr. Jack Vines!
