No, you want the crossmember to stay on the car. You get the stuff basically in place, then one the bolts are aligned it will "clunk" into place and align the assembly front to back in the car.

Only for this particular service operation would removing the crossmember be helpful.

Were you planning on putting together a complete and comprehensive Twin-Ultramatic manual containing all the updates and corrections made? Depending on what's needed, I can possibly help and it would be great to have one for earlier Ultramatics too.
