Had to replace my Optima It was 5 years old too. Seems if you let it discharge completely, they does not last. That and my car is stored in a non heated garage.
Put the old battery on charge, The Charger stated it was fully charge. Had a guy load test while I tried to start it, he said the battery was bad, so I got another one
I was told that if you start using a maintainer, you pretty much have to use it always you you might get 10 years out of the battery
Might be better to drive the car every 2 weeks
I am not a mechanic this is just things that I have seem

Batteries that sit discharged for long periods are often ruined. A discharged battery can be subject to freeze damage and to sulphation.
