Keeping it 6V positive Ground would be the best way to go. I have had experience with running an 8 Volt battery. They are a "Poisoned Chalice" and really strain the charging system, particularly if you have a non temperature compensated voltage regulator as all Juniors up to 39 and Seniors prior to 1936, which I would suggest have two coil regulators at best and cut outs before those. I ran the 8V battery in my 38 Richards Six for 3 years and it really gave the charging meter a rough time. On start up it was like you shorted out the Field on the Generator as it went full bore at over 8 volts until the voltage regulator heated up and it went down to 7.5 volts, then it appeared to be ok. In the warm up period you could smell the wiring and it was a disaster waiting to happen. I went back to 6 volts and fitted a higher torque starter motor from the 1950's. The torque ratings vary considerably with the starter motors. I have attached a chart on starter motor torque variations for general Forum information. I note that these later bolt up starters will not fit your 34 but perhaps you could fit a later single bolt starter but I do not have the starter torque ratings for these. Perhaps Dave would know what higher torque starters may be fitted to your 34. I have a 1934 starter motor fitted to my 1928 533 and it works well. Good luck.
