I thought it was my imagination that the site was moving slower this morning but after noticing the high number of users, maybe not. I see despite all your efforts, the bots have discovered the site again.-- up to near 800 one time I looked. Not sure if they are the reason for the slowness today or if the database might be full again but it seems to be taking a much longer time than usual for a simple search result or page change to pop up.

Seems slow to me, too. Russians?

Yes, there is a botnet at play, hitting many websites with thousands of requests from 10's of thousands of infected PCs from around the world. So blocking them is not as straightforward as other times, as every request is coming in from a different IP address.

But I've tightened up many of the filtering and Protector settings, so over the next few days, it should start to blacklist those repeat offenders, and the numbers should start to drop off. I've already seen it drop from 800 last night to around 400 this morning.

In the meantime, I paid to increase the RAM on the server, so that should help to keep things speedy.

Due to the fact that I have made the filtering more aggressive, this can also lead to the possibility of false positives. So, for some reason, if you suddenly get locked out or the website starts saying it's unable or you get just a blank screen, then email me with your public IP address and I can see if I can whitelist you.

And it appears only a handful of members sign in. 688 guests and 1 member signed in? I’m sure that if you are not signed in, your requests could be subject to stricter filtering. In other words, sign in to avoid being locked out.

On my own sites and primarily for email I’ve had to resort to blocking entire IP ranges once I determine where they are located. Some, however, show U.S. or other more common locations so one has to draw a fine line.
