288 Head Gasket Question

Hello all,

I am in the process of restoring a 1949 Deluxe 8. It is a 2211 / 2265 featuring a 288 with the 3 speed manual + R11 overdrive. I pulled the engine and trans to get in and really clean everything up. At this point everything powertrain wise is painted and ready for reassembly.

I will be using a new head gasket and will coat both sides with Permatex copper spray. Here is what I am thinking in terms of procedure:

1 - Clean block and head with wax and grease remover.
2 - Spray both sides of the gasket with copper spray following directions on the can.
3 - Install the gasket on the engine.
4 - Install the head.
5 - Torque in increments following the sequence found in the manual.
6 - Bring the engine to operating temperature and let cool.
7 - Re-torque following the sequence found in the manual.

Am I missing anything here?

With the engine out of the car maneuvering the head will be a much easier task. However, I will not be able to complete steps 6 and 7 for a considerable amount of time. Likely not until next summer given where I am in the project and the time that I have available.

Does anyone foresee any issues with waiting a while before performing steps 6 and 7?

Thank you for the help!

I don't think there is any issue with waiting to retorque the head next year.

What all have you done to the engine while it's out? There are a few things you may want to check/do while you have easy access to everything. Do you know the general condition of the engine?
