Hunting for detailed diagrams for the 22nd series fuel pump, the oil pump and the carburetor.

I'm so surprised that the factory service manual 46-50 has no mention at all of these critical components. What factory literature covers the operation and servicing of these systems? This feels just like the official missing section on Electrical...where are they??

If I need to rebuild the fuel pump (a possibility), I'd really like to see an exploded parts diagram of it showing everything clearly. Yes, I've read the helpful How to Rebuild a Fuel Pump article and have rebuilt my MoPar Carter fuel pumps several times, but a comprehensive diagram of of my model pump should exist somewhere...

I see a writeup on the carburetor for the Custom (my model) Carter WDO 531-S in the 46-48 Repair and Tuneup Manual, but the writeup is minimal and the scrapbook-style cutaway pictures aren't super clear. What about this one?

Can't find any information on the oil pump.

When I rebuilt my fuel pump and carburetor I found some great YouTube videos of guys doing the same that I could follow along with. They also had some helpful tips.

You might check the 51-4 manual for info on the fuel pump and oil pump. The later items are almost the same as those used in the 22nd series so the instructions and diagrams should be very similar. . I haven't looked but you might also check some of the prewar manuals and see if you can find more detail on the oil and fuel pumps.

For the WDO, I did find an early prewar Carter writeup on the carb and other than the jet sizes and adjustments doubt it changed very much by 48. I believe jet sizes and specific adjustments might be mentioned in the all model specifications issue given in the service counselor covering your year. This writeup I found is a copy of a copy of a copy so don't know if the illustrations will be as clear as you want. If it won't work you might do a search on ebay or some of the literature vendors and see if you can find an original copy of the Carter sheet.

You might also look on ebay and see if you can find a Chilton or Motor's Manual published in the early 50s. Chilton's might work but IMO, Motors has better quality photos. Those books usually have good info on pumps and carbs and are geared to the independent garage mechanics who probably didn't have access to factory info. They often have much more comprehensive information than factory documentation. One thing about Packard literature is if an item was used previously and stayed relatively unchanged, Packard too often assumed dealership mechanics had done it all before on an earlier model so didn't go into much detail in any later literature

Thank you. I was really looking for a good quality cutaway diagram (like the one below from the 1935-41 parts list plate series) and a rebuild procedure as I've followed for my other pumps. But you referred me to a great fuel pump rebuild video by Then and Now which was extremely helpful, so thank you for that: I'm set for that service and don't need to see the process written out. Pictures/videos are worth 1000's of words!

How many different types of double-action fuel pumps were used for the 22nd series Custom models? There are two 2255's here, and each has a fuel pump that's different. The car in deteriorated condition (but the most original) has pump #1539116 (below) which has vents to either side (viewing the pump straight on). The newer-to-me car that arrived a few months ago has pump (153)3867 with a single vent outlet pointing straight out (viewing it straight on), casting above the fuel chamber is flat, not domed like the 9116, and the fuel screen/strainer is a full-circle brass screen in a delicate frame, compared to a quarter screen/strainer for the 9116. Are there other styles? Is any one more or less "correct" for these cars?

I'm not trying to make-work, drive myself crazy by changing things that don't need to be changed. But I also like my cars to look as factory as I can reasonably get them. When I look at a service manual plate illustration, I like my engine to look like what I'm reading; when I see inconsistencies, my inner nitpick starts yelling.

9116 is the correct fuel pump for a 22nd & 23rd Series Custom 8

3867 is for 1938-39 Six & 120 and will still work for the Custom 8 but may need to have the lower fuel section rotated to a different orientation for the custom 8

Over the years pumps get changed with whatever fits so not surprising to find numbers that are not supposed to be there. The pump in my 1951 Henney-Packard was from two different pump models put together onto one but fortunately I have plenty cores to get the proper bits.

Here's the 1539116 fuel pump after I cleaned it up and rebuilt it. This wasn't hard, but it took time. I don't have a bead blaster, or a parts cleaner. Think I should put that on the list to help efforts like this not take as long.






















Missing the horsehair filter that should be present with the clip keeping it in place. Had to improvise with a green scrubby, cut to size.







I painted the fuel bowl black, but later removed it with acetone, as the black wasn't staying on. Bare metal will suffice, there's some kind of coating on it, but not sure what it is.










Now, imagine my surprise when I realized today that though I had the pump assembled and installed correctly, the hard fuel line plumbing that was present on the car (see the picture, red for hard, green for the flexible segment) was plumbed for the incorrect 1533867 pump, which has its inlet on the right (where it really should be if the fuel lead hard line enters scene right). Hmph! Now I have to re-plumb the line as the factory plate shows. More especially because I plan on putting a sediment glass bowl filter before the carburetor, and there's no way to do it with the existing setup, the lead line into the carb is too short, but the factory routing will permit it just fine.




Check out the flexible fuel pig-tail hose that was present. Goodyear, 10 20 00 A. Nothing comes up in web searching that's close to this hose. Perhaps it's a specialty item...The 5/8" female hex end is swivel, the other end is 7/16" male. With the proper pump in place and the correct orientation, I need to replace this hose with one nearly double the length. What do y'all use in yours? Is there a specific specialty hose for this application or do you do what works?

What I did was take the old line to my jobber, he had the new line and barb-sert fittings that press into the ID of the new line then you slide the yellow collar down to ensure a seal. Works great but not original but functional and rather inexpensive.
