Ethanol or alcohol additive to gasoline is nothing new. It was added to gasoline during the late 70's to early 80's. Many snake oil gas tank additives such DeIcer and STP gas treatment contain alcohol.

Try a brown paper bag. If that is too thin try a corn flakes box.

Now that all the yuppies have left... may I give a short lesson on cutting gaskets?

(You older guys already know this)

Lay the gasket material on the part and tap around the edge with a ball peen hammer to cut out the gasket. For thicker gaskets mark it that way then finish cutting with scissors.

To cut the bolt holes use a hole punch like you get at the stationary store.

Or, lay the old gasket on the paper and mark it out with spray paint. Then cut it out.
