What is the easiest way to swap out the old hood ornament for the new on my 1940? Doesn't seem very accessable.

The trim piece that runs the length of the hood needs to slide back a couple 2 to 3 inches. There are some nuts that you can loosen from under the hood. Then, push back on the base of the hood ornament and lift. It's only on there by friction.

Glad to have helped. Looks good.

I actually did the opposite with my car. I found a very, very nice condition plain-looking "bail" and replaced the cormorant. What bothered me about the cormorant is that the bird was one of those replicas that may have first been mounted on a whiskey decanter. The replicas can easily be identified by the wings being permanently mounted onto the bird's body. I'd rather have nothing than a poor copy of the real thing.

This is a copy from American Arrow.

I have a wife that will hand me tools, wax the car, look for missing nuts and bolts, and enjoys driving the car. And she likes Cormorants :)

So, while it isn't entirely correct for the car, my story is the little old lady who bought the car in 1940 wanted one of those "bird thangs" and the dealer obliged her :)

So, the wife is happy.........
