The newest Time magazine has the Packard factory on the cover. There is a photo of it on the PAC forum.

I have my doubts if Detroit can ever rise again. There's talk of actually destroying remnants of smaller nearly abandoned towns to get them off the books as the cost of maintaining a city government when there's nearly no population (tax base) is unsustainable...the same thing could be said about Detroit, it's just a monetary sinkhole and all attempts to rebuild it have so far failed miserably.

The NY Times had an article about the demolition of Pennsylvania Station many years ago and made a most appropriate remark to the effect that future generations will not judge us for what we've built but for what we've destroyed.

Why tear them down????? Just leave them. Everyone abandon the town. That way people like me can move in on squatters rights.

Trust me you don't want to move in "squating". Your safety is more important than a free house. You cannot print enough money to save Detroit. The politicans have mismanaged, stolen and wasted every dollar ever thrown at the problem. The city council is the laughing stock of the state. I was born and raised here, but living within the city limits is impossible. The crime rate and lack of police make it open season on anyone dumb enough to go out of the immediate downtown or Mexicantown areas. The Packard plant has been raped by the "urban miners" who have stolen everything of value.

Scary how often life seems to imitate art.

Sounds like it's time for the Robocop initiative.

It is very sad to see Detroit in such a bad state that it looks like Stalingrad did in 1944. I grew up across the river from Detroit in Windsor,Ontario (a gritty industrial city in its own right)and as a small boy my grandfather would take me over the movies, a White Tower hamburger or a glass of Vernor's Ginger Ale at the old bottling plant etc. We would walk about Cadillac Square in the evening and even venture down Michigan Ave. after dark. Haven't been able to do thats safely in about 50 years. Those were the good old days.(sigh..)

The problems of Detroit will not stop at the Michigan state border. It is creeping across the nation at an alarming rate. Unemployment, cost of living, government malaise, deteriorating infrastructure is coming to a state near you.
