See other reply to the oil pump and filter. as for the front mount. I had to mount the fan in that area. Plus I jut didnt like the front mount.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing! And I'm glad you did flow tests on the pump, saves me the trouble of having it done. I had an idea of using a BB Chrysler oil pump on the I8, but getting it to fit in all the different chassis would be a bitch. It'd work fine on my car and your car, but anything '51 and up would have interference problems with the engine mount. This works much better IMHO.

You should have found a '51-'54 block then, as you could have used the side mounts. Wouldn't work with your oiling system very well though. Not too sure I like that fan setup however, but it does put the fan where you need it in the radiator, and saves you from going to an electric fan, so it works.

Here is the 48 288 block I used in place of the 52 327 block. I like this block better than the later one it replaced. Much more sexy looking to me. and does not have all the later mounts cast in it. This 288 block was the engine I built the car around. it ran real good but burned a lot of oil. I kept Lucas oil in buisness for some time.

You can go alot. But it is not needed. I did relieve the first block but talked to a guy here in town that holds many unblown flat head records with a 260 inch ford, He found that relieving was not that inportant. I will show what I did instead of doing a deep relief cut.

I opted for this style of relieving. The roof in the head like mine or stock are more that sufficient to give the needed flow with out doing some wild relieving job. It just does not need it.

I'm assuming you had someone grind the cam to give you some more lift to make up for sinking the seats that far down in the block? If so, who did your cam?

On the subject of heads, here's a '53 327 Patrician head on the left, a '47 356 "HC" head in the middle, and a '48 356 head on the right. It gives you a good idea of the change of head design that Packard was playing with through the years.

What? I hope your not serious, thinking the valves would work in that position. I bored out all 16 vavle seats and after all the grinding and port work was done I pressed in the chrome nickel seats. The cam is not stock. Ed Isky a buddy of mine made the cam for me and added a bit od over lap to the profile to clean the cyls out. 120 degrees.
